Who we are
Jennifer and Lora are students at The University of Texas at Tyler. They have been researching different female and male teachers on how they react with their students for about two months now. This is for a class project and these are just their own views on how they saw things in these certain classes. So check it out! |
Question
How do female teachers versus male teachers respond to their students? Which gender do male and female teachers respond to the most? Which gender is more strict on the students? Does the gender of the teacher affect the way they treat their students? |
What is Gender?
Birth, race, kind, male, and female are words that are rolled up into one called Gender. It is the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex (Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary).

Introduction
Gender roles are apparent in today's world, and the socialization of such roles makes society this way. Perhaps the most important influence of teachers on the development of gender roles, however, is that teachers respond differently to girls and boys. Even in preschool, teachers, apparently unaware of the differential treatment they are handing out, pay more attention to boys and respond more to boys who act aggressively and to girls who act dependent (Serbin & O'Leary, 1975). We observed elementary level classes taught by both males and females. Our research attempts to reveal whether the gender of the students and/or the teachers impacts the quality of education and treatment students receive in the classroom. |
